During the transition
Period patterns can change. However, very heavy or prolonged bleeding, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after sex needs assessment. Note when the bleeding started, how long it lasted and which medicines you take.
After menopause
Vaginal bleeding or spotting after 12 months without a period needs assessment by a doctor, even if it happens only once. Causes can include thinning tissues, polyps and other conditions. The possibility of serious disease is also investigated.
What might assessment involve?
After discussing your history and examining you, your doctor may recommend investigations such as an ultrasound, an assessment of the inside of the womb or a tissue sample. Your doctor will decide which is appropriate. Bleeding stopping on its own does not remove the need for assessment.
See it from your own perspective.

- What would help me remember details such as the timing and duration of bleeding?
